Wednesday 14th July	Bastille Day - French Celebration Blue Bell Inn, Arkendale 'Good moning. Please read zis very carefully 'cos I shall write zis only once'. 14th July is Bastille day in France, and a little bit of that country will be coming to Arkendale to celebrate with our French counterparts on that very day. Arkendale's answer to René from 'Allo Allo' will be taking up residence at the Blue Bell for the evening and the pub will be transformed into that famous French café. French food will be served, accordion music played and the atmosphere from that famous war-time café transported to this little part of Yorkshire. It would be super if all who go could dress up too, whether as one of the glamorous waitresses, the English policeman or Herr Flick himself, but we realise that this may not be practical for everyone. However it would add to the fun if everyone could at least wear a little something in keeping with the era or the program, be it a beret, a headscarf or a waitress's 'pinny'. Ken, Natalie and Linda invite you all to join them for the evening and join in the fun, but they wish to decline the offer of anyone trying to impersonate Edith in full song. That might prove too much for anyone to bear!

Thursday 3rd June	Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot A Clay Pigeon Shoot to raise money for Church Funds will be held at Knaresborough Gun Club, starting at 6.30pm. No advance tickets, just turn up on the night. Big prizes, in two classes, and other prizes. There will also be a massive raffle. "Regulars" for shooters with frequent experience (first prize, £50) "Seasonal" for shooters with less experience (first prize, £25) "Beginners" 12-16 years old (first prize, £15) Shooters will be required to bring their own gun and conform with regulations. There will be 30 sporting birds and entry is £10 per card. The organisers would be grateful for donations towards the raffle and towards the prizes for the shoot itself. Friday 28th - Monday 31st May	Brides Revisited - an exhibition of Bridal Gowns and Accessories from 1860 onwards St Bartholomew's Church and Arkendale Community Hall, Arkendale Saturday 29th, Sunday 30th, Bank Holiday Monday 31st May, 10.30am - 4.30 pm daily. A preview evening with wine will be held on Friday 28th for villagers. Ticket only. (see previous entry above) The exhibition is being staged by Lyn Hopwood of Ripon, who has an extensive collection of clothes and accessories from bygone days. A flower pedestal will be arranged by Bob Forbes of Oasis Flowers in Ripon in the church. Admission £3.00, with programme describing the exhibits, on the day from the Church and Hall. Refreshments available in Arkendale Community Hall. Parking will be signposted. This event is a joint venture between the church and hall to raise funds for both groups.
Friday 28th May	Brides Revisited - PREVIEW St Bartholomew's Church and Arkendale Community Hall, Arkendale 7.30pm at the Church This is for villagers only. Tickets for the preview are available from Eileen Houseman, Jean Cox and Sarah Shipman. There will be a welcome by the Rector and an introduction to the exhibition by Lynn Hopwood. After viewing the exhibits in the church, guests will go down to the hall to view the exhibits there, followed by wine and nibbles. Tickets £5, with a programme describing the exhibits, include refreshments.
Saturday 22nd May	Coneythorpe Charity Run The entrance fee will be £5.00 for runners, walkers, riders and cyclists. Proceeds will be in aid of Haiti.
Tuesday 18th May	Parish Meeting, Parish Council AGM and Parish Council Meeting Arkendale Community Hall, 7.30pm. The Annual Parish Meeting will be followed by the Parish Council AGM and a Parish Council Meeting. The timing of the latter two meetings is dependant on the conclusion of the Parish Meeting The Parish Meeting, which all parishioners are encouraged to attend, provides a very valuable opportunity to raise matters of concern or interest to all. The Parish Councillors will welcome a good attendance and also the chance to meet new people in the village who may as yet not know how the Council is run. Sunday 28th March	Arkendale 10K Run The Arkendale 10k run will be starting and finishing at Sunnyside Farm in Arkendale. This is a really enjoyable occasion with fun for all the family. Sunday 13th December	Appalachian Step Dance Blue Bell Inn, Arkendale, 7.30pm Cricket on the Hearth - the appalachian step dance team 'Cricket on the Hearth' will be dancing and playing folk music at Blue Bell. During the summer the team dances outside on interlocking boards, but for indoor dancing they need a good wooden floor so will be using the back bar at the Blue Bell for an informal evening of dancing, music and socialising. If you have not seen this style of dancing why not drop in and have a look.

Wednesday 7th October	The Reading Group 4, Pinfold Green, Staveley, 7pm-9pm. We will be discussing Philip Pullman's 'The Dark Materials'. The following book was to have been 'The Smoke Jumper' by Nicholas Evans. However, unfortunately, the library cannot help us with this so we are going to be reading 'The Moonstone' by Wilkie Coffins. 'On her eighteenth birthday, beautiful Rachel Verinder receives a present like no other - an enormous, glittering diamond. Lithe does she know that this legendary stone will bring with it a world of mystery and danger. Snatched from a scared statue in India, the diamond is the subject of an intense world-wide search by priests whose ultimate duty is to find and restore the stone to its rightful place. the stone seems to hold strange powers beyond mere beauty, perhaps even a curse travels with it! One night the diamond is stolen - who has stolen it and can it be found and returned to its rightful owners in time to stop the mysterious forces that threaten to tear apart Rachel's life and happiness?' This book is a classic by the same author as, 'The Woman in White' and comes highly recommended. I thought it might be fun to have, as our last book of 2009, 'Men are from Mars, Women from Venus'. To make this more 'balanced' I wondered if there are any guys out there who would volunteer to read the book and attend our meeting on the 9th December. Sunday, 27th September	Special Service in St Bartholomew's Church On Sunday, 27th September at 6.30pm there will be a special service of celebration in Arkendale Church. With the new community hall in the forefront of our minds that weekend, the service will be a service of praise and thanksgiving, focussing very much on the future and all that is good in all the villages that the new hall will serve.

See the History of the Halls - Old and New For further information contact Judith - tel: 340185 The committee are putting on a small display of archive material at the opening event for the new hall and are seeking any information/photos of the hall, particularly the period 1921 - 1960.We are sure it was a popular venue for dances in the past. We have mention in an old accounts book of the Pig Club meeting at the hall in 1947 and of Lantern Film Shows and Military Whist Drives in the years after the Second World War. This event which starts at 7pm will include several interactive workshops aimed at reducing and preventing these collisions. Wednesday 26th August	Arkdendale Cake Stall at Knaresborough Market The annual market stall is to be held on Wednesday, 26th August, in the morning at Knaresborough market. All offers of cakes, pies, chutney, jams, garden produce, and indeed anything else that will sell, is to be taken to Eileen (Tel: 340531) or Sarah (Tel: 340515) by the evening of the 25th. If anyone is willing to help behind the stall on the day, please also see Eileen. All proceeds from the stall will be donated to Arkendale Church. The event is usually an enjoyable and happy one, albeit hard work, and the more people there are to help the more coffee breaks we can all enjoy.

Friday 14th and Saturday 15th August	Staveley Nature Reserve - Summer Safari 10am - 4pm Nature reserves are a great place to go for a free day out in the summer holidays. Everyone is welcome to visit Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves and enjoy a walk, or to look at the amazing wildlife living in these protected areas. Yorkshire Wildlife Trust would like to make more people aware of their local nature reserves, so we are having a summer safari of family events covering the whole of Yorkshire. Our fourth venue for the summer safari will be Staveley nature reserve. There will be loads to see and do, nature themed activities and information about your local nature reserves and wildlife. Thursday 16th July click for poster	PRATS at the Bluebell 8pm The Yorkshire Longsword Dance Team based in Pateley Bridge will be visiting the Bluebell Inn in Arkendale. They go under the somewhat unusual name of the PRATS, which stands for the Pateley Real Ale Tasting Society, and they will be demonstrating their skills in the Bluebell car park. In spite of their unusual name they are a serious dance team having entertained at Whitby and Ulverston Folk festivals in 2008 and the York international sword spectacular. This year they will be freshly returned from the Ulverston Festival when they come to Arkendale and are taking place at the Longsword tournament at Sheffield later in the year, in addition they take regular local bookings in Nidderdale. They have devised their own sword dances, but have adopted a number of other types of dances to vary their programme, including the Hebridean Weavers Dance, Twiglet (a border morris dance) and a fun dance with sticks thought to be basque in origin which they have renamed the "chicken" dance as the start resembles chickens pecking the ground so the dancers add in some chicken sounds. This is usually the dance they are most requested to perform by people who have seen the team before. They are a mixed group of men and women, and one of their members is one of our village residents. After the dancing outside there will be a folk music session in the pub itself. Please come along and support them and join in the fun, and please spread the word

Monday 15th June	Morris Dancing at the Blue Bell Ripon City Morris Dancers will be at the Blue Bell from 8.00 pm, dancing in the car park. This will be subject to the weather being fine and the team having a sufficient complement of dancers. They dance the North West Morris tradition in kit of red, blue and white with bowler hats decorated with fresh flowers and wearing clogs, supported by a strong band of musicians. Their last visit to the Blue Bell was in 2007.
Saturday 6th June	Family Fun Day - Scotton To be held at Scotton Village Hall from 10.30am until 2.30pm. Thursday 4th June	Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot A Clay Pigeon Shoot to raise money for Church Funds will be held at Knaresborough Gun Club, starting at 6.30pm. No advance tickets, just turn up on the night. Big prizes, in two classes, including a meal for two, whisky, wine and lots of other prizes. There will also be a raffle. "Regulars" for shooters with frequent experience, "Seasonal" for shooters with less frequent experience, "Beginners" 12-16 years old. Shooters will be required to bring their own gun and conform with regulations. There will be 30 sporting birds and entry is £10 per card. The organisers would be grateful for donations towards the raffle and towards the prizes for the shoot itself. Wednesday 20th May	Village Hall Delivery The new Village Hall is due to be delivered this day. It will arrive in various pre-fabricated sections to be erected on the prepared site next to the Bluebell Inn. The first lorry is scheduled to deliver at 7.00 am and the second at 9.30/10.00 am.
Saturday 16th May	Village Spring Clean Volunteers are sought to help clean up the village, and spare a couple of hours to improve the local environment. The Parish Council have arranged this day in conjunction with Harrogate Borough Council, who will provide appropriate equipment, for example picking arms, plastic bags and thick gloves. The more help there is, the quicker the task will be completed - so please join us! Meet at Hill House on Moor Lane at 10am. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Many thanks to those who turned up to clear the village of litter and rubbish. It turned out to be a reasonably light task, as it became evident that the various litter bins in the village were serving their purpose.

Saturday 21st February	Tea Tasting There is a "Tea Tasting" at May Cottage, from 10am to 12 noon. There will be a wide variety of teas to try, some very unusual indeed. People can drink as many cups of tea as they can manage, with home-made cakes, and there will also be a raffle. Offers of raffle prizes and home-made cakes will be very welcome. This is a new event for the village and we hope that as many people as possible will come to support it and enjoy the delights of teas from Gunpowder to Butterfly Rose.
